Considering the rapid developments taking place in Delhi University (DU), students are ensured of getting a firmer, and faster grip on the Web as the varsity plans to introduce Wi-Fi in all its constituent colleges along with the up-gradation of its internet connection bandwidth from the current 100 mbps to 1 gbps in the next six months.

The announcement is part of a document - "Infrastructural Developments and Academic Initiatives in the University of Delhi" - published in the university website recently.

University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental confirmed that, "All the up gradation is expected to get over by the next academic session that is by July 2010. The funding has come from the National Knowledge Commission."

Pental said the superior bandwidth will give a boost to file-sharing and video streaming for the students.

"An internal network of all DU colleges through a dedicated fibre-optic network will supplement the bandwidth upgrade," he added.

With the Christmas season soon approaching, the university plans to distribute the Christmas goodies in the form of forty more computers to its colleges apart from the forty already received by them and even better news is that two servers will follow.

Pental said that the university is going to have a "student-friendly" website look, which will be updated frequently.

Work on the website has already started, with the faculty being asked to fill in their information in a three-page document that can be downloaded from the website, the vice-chancellor said.

The document on "Infrastructural Developments and Academic Initiatives" also details about the funds that the university has received under various plans.

While it got only Rs.21.25 crore under the Tenth Plan (2002-07), the amount went up almost ten-fold, to Rs.214 crore, under the Eleventh Plan (2007-2012), as per the document.

Under expansion programmes related to reservation of seats for candidates from Other Backward Classes, the university will receive Rs.1,903 crore as recurring five-year grants and non-recurring three-year grants.

According to Pental, this fund will form the backbone of the expansion plans.

The university will also add 3,554 teachers to its ranks, including 2,860 faculty positions spread across 53 UGC-maintained colleges, according to the document.

Many infrastructural plans are also lined up in the document. The North Campus, it says, will have three new buildings: the Mathematical Sciences, Examination, and Social Sciences Teaching Blocks. The South Campus, on the other hand, will have a Faculty of Management Studies building and new hostels for boys and girls.

In addition to the composite law faculty campus, the University's Dhaka campus will get two girls hostels with a combined capacity of 1,500 students, the report uploaded in the website said.

This document is seen as the summary report for the University's Academic Council as the Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental's term expires in August 2010.
