India's Amity University will open its UAE doors in September and aims to attract 5,000 students...

At a time when some universities have downsized their operations or shut down in the UAE, India-based Amity University will launch several programmes in September.

In the space of a year, it will build a new campus at Dubai International Academic City announced Amity University Chancellor Atul Chauhan yesterday. "We will be using rented accommodation for the time being and in one year we will have our own campus."

Over four years, the university hopes to attract more than 5,000 students he said. "We will be the largest private university in the UAE."

Degree programmes
Amity will offer bachelor and masters degree programmes in nuclear science, aerospace engineering, solar and alternative energy, transport and logistics, banking and insurance and hospitality administration.

Chauhan said the decision to offer these programmes came after a detailed analysis of the needs of the UAE. Tuition fees will range from Dh25,000 to Dh35,000.

While Indian nationals will make up the bulk of the student cohort, Chauhan said, the institution will also aim to attract other nationalities including Emiratis. To this end, 125 scholarships will be available to Emiratis and meritorious candidates he said.

"Amity has a great commitment to the region and will offer over 20 career-focused degree programmes with a strong emphasis on research and collaboration with the respective industries."

Dr Ayoub Kazim, Managing Director of TECOM Investments' Education Cluster, said: "At DIAC, we believe our partnership with Amity is a major step towards fulfilling our objectives in enhancing the academic community and transforming Dubai into a regional destination for higher education. The programmes being offered by Amity Dubai campus address key industry demand for qualified professionals and are in line with our endeavour to create and sustain a knowledge-based economy in the region."

Expansion
Chauhan told Gulf News about the institution's ambitious expansion plans across the globe. "We just received approval from the Romanian government to set up a campus there. In the next four years, we will have campuses in Australia, Paris, Vienna and Romania."

The university already has branches in London, Singapore, New York, California and Mauritius.

Amity has more than 80,000 students pursuing 240 programmes in 50 diverse disciplines across its various locations.
