The Montessori concept of education is finding more and more adherents in North India, particularly in Punjab. Chandigarh has been familiar with this concept for a while, though when it was introduced in the country about a century ago, it remained limited to South India. However, it has now caught the attention of education experts, and Montessori teaching is used in 52 countries, with the USA taking the lead.

The Montessori method helps children learn naturally. The primary focus is to treat each child as a unique individual. This allows children to learn at their own pace. The goals and outcome among Montessori students are similar to those in conventional schools, but the experience is stress free for children, parents and educators. The secret of education lies in respecting the child and to prepare and groom him or her for all kinds of challenges in life. It strives to provide real-life experience that cultivates the child’s sense of independence, self-esteem and love for peace.

The benefits of authentic Montessori methodology have been refined further into a blended curriculum to give an extra edge to students while meeting the aspirations of the traditional education system. Interestingly, sensing its importance the Tamil Naidu government has already introduced this method in its government schools and other states are planning to introduce the same shortly. With a vision to be a global leader in child development through the empowerment of children, the concept believes in cultivating a child’s sense of independence, self-esteem and love for peace in its own unique way.

Aming to help children in their most important years, i.e., from birth to 6 years, the Montessori method encourages and allows children to do anything that interests them and focuses on the development of their five senses. The role of a teacher in this scenario is to inspire and nurture curiosity and help the children to accomplish their tasks themselves. The children of different ages are allowed to work in the same room thereby encouraging them to interact and help each other. Montessori preschools all over the world use scientifically designed identical equipments with which the children work.

The concept believes that education is the chief defence of the nation. The secret of education lies in respecting the child and to prepare and groom him or her for all kinds of challenges in life. It strives to provide real-life experiences that cultivate child’s sense of independence, self-esteem and love for peace. It promotes global perspective among the students and promises to leave no stone unturned in transforming children into future pillars of family, society and nation.

The concept aims to encourage children to realise their true potential, to make children learn and develop a joy in learning and to prepare children to be life-long learners by developing their skills as academic achievers.

Currently, ABC Montessori, a part of GCS Group, based in Chandigarh is adopting Montessori education in the region. Bhupindra International Public School was opened at Patiala in 2004, followed by a second school at Greater Noida.

“The Montessori concept of education that our school follows is time-tested, well researched and universally acclaimed system,” says Ms Indu Sharma, principal, Bhupindra International Public School (BIPS).

“Though it is 101 years old, it has not been surpassed till date by any other system of education. The system provides numerous opportunities for ‘hands on’ and ‘minds on’ rich and fulfilling experiences.”
Admissions to Pre-School start at the age of a year and a half up to six years depending on the class in which the child is enrolled.
