New Delhi: Upgradation of existing schools in Delhi and providing formal education to school dropouts of migrant labourers working in the capital will be the key agenda of Mr. Arvinder Singh Lovely, the newly-appointed Education Minister of Delhi.

Speaking on his plans, Mr. Lovely said, "In my second turn, now, as the Education Minister, I am trying to make all the existing schools better in terms of infrastructural facilities."

"Out of the total 1,162 schools operating in morning and evening shifts, we would be taking a total of about 650 premises for up-gradation," Mr. Lovely added.

The upgradation work, ranging from minor repairs to new constructions with an investment of Rs.200 crores, is already underway in East Delhi, North-East Delhi and North-West Delhi.

The Delhi State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation and the Public Works Department have been engaged by the Directorate of Education (DoE) to upgrade and improve the existing infrastructure of schools.

Under the project, additional rooms are being constructed, hazardous constructions being demolished, and provisions of fire safety, double doors in each class, fire alarms and wide school gates are being made.

Also, drinking water facilities are being created, electrical systems being refurbished, classrooms being provided green boards, effective ventilation and lights are being painted in bright colours. The toilet facilities and playgrounds are also being improved.

"We have 1,162 government schools, 350 government-aided schools, about 1,500 public schools, nearly 2,000 primary schools and a number of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas. There is no child who goes without admission in Delhi," further said Mr. Lovely.

With the children of migrant labourers still forming a big chunk of those out-of-schools, Mr. Lovely said that they have been provided help and funds from non-government organizations to make formal education easy.
